A lot of people struggle with giving up sugar, as most people have a big craving for it and are used to the way it tastes in drinks, desserts and such; the so-called “sweet tooth”!
Gradually over the span of the last ten years or so, I completely almost cut it out of my diet. I started by psychologically manipulating myself into hating it and slowly cutting it out of the things I eat and drink, such as tea, coffee etc.
In the beginning, I used to drink tea with sugar but I gradually started using less and less sugar. I would also choose foods that don’t have any added sugars. Granted I always preferred savory foods to sweet ones anyways.
It isn’t just training your taste buds to get used to the things you consume without sugar, but it’s also training your mind psychologically that it associated the taste of sugar to something disgusting.
Now, I have reached a level where I am consuming almost no sugar at all. So much so, that if I taste something that has sugar no matter how little, I can immediately taste it, almost as if it is burning my mouth! Psychologically, I cannot consume sugar anymore, as the taste of it is disgusting to me.
My cereals are almost like cardboard but I love them now! I can’t understand why companies feel the need to add sugars to these products where the plain taste is actually fine, and if people need a bit more flavor boost they can just add some fresh berries on top of it or something…
I recommend that you take this kind of approach, as you probbaly cannot give up all sugars suddenly overnight. Weaning it off requires you to reject it both mentally and physically. Once you reject it mentally, your body will slowly follow.
