System errors

Do computer systems make mistakes?Yes, ALL THE TIME! Just this week I had to spend many hours of my time calling and chasing up to fix errors made by computers. For example: – My credit card is set to be paid automatically but it didn’t, leaving me with extra fees and marring my credit record – A product I paid for online but the order somehow wasn’t “captured” by the system… now have to go beg for it or get my money back – Order shipments going in the wrong place – Airline miles not being recorded after flights And […]

Imposter Syndrome anyone?

You may have heard of the so-called Imposter Syndrome, a feeling some famous and successful people get when they struggle to internally justify their fame or success — i.e. they feel like an imposter filling their own role in the world. Most entrepreneurs have it the other way around (myself included), a condition I like to call the “Sherlock Holmes Syndrome” where a person grasps and understands a lot of things quickly but feels the rest of the world is too slow to catch on!  Entrepreneurs often see upcoming trends and have the brightest ideas & solutions, but mostly go under-appreciated […]

Sucks to be different!

It certainly “sucks” to be different from the majority of people and not conforming to common norms! I’ve learned this the hard way while engaging in startup businesses, many ideas and features that may be of interest to me don’t apply much to the general masses. 🔷 Here are some examples: They say most people place higher value onto something the more elusive it is, i.e. the more effort they undertake to acquire it. For me it’s the opposite, the effort makes me question the value of things and move on! Many people are drawn to events that offer free […]

Dear survey writers…

👉 If you’re in charge of writing customer satisfaction surveys for your company, please make sure the questions you put actually cover things the customer wants to convey, not what your company wants to hear! Recently I was on a flight and many things went wrong… there was a delay in departure, various seat functions were not working, and my bag arrived late & damaged. 🛄 When I got a survey to fill out afterwards, I couldn’t comment on any of these areas because none of them were covered! All the questions were about benign things like “cleanliness of aircraft”, […]

A big shock!

What had shocked me most about the world’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic… 😷 Is that we are willing to have tight lockdowns and stop most economic activity over one disease, which has roughly a 2% mortality rate. What about all the other prevalent illnesses and causes of death? Oh, those we can live with because they’ve become “acceptable” to us over the years. 🤷‍♂️ Personally I’ve lost many close relatives during the pandemic period, none were due to Covid and none were “counted” as we count each Covid death. My father was among those and we could barely even […]

Ebru TV feature

My latest TV interview was with Ebru channel in Kenya, great talk about the future of work and the internal “soft skills” necessary for entrepreneurs to succeed! The program is aptly called “The Millionnaire Mind”.

PR frustrations…

Being candid here – dealing with PR & media agencies can be quite frustrating at times! It seems they speak some sort of alien language and follow a different logic than the rest of us 😊 This is not about one or a few particular agencies that may be outliers, but it’s the norm across the entire industry worldwide… I’ve seen this with more than 50 of them in multiple regions. If you’ve dealt with these agencies you might agree with me that it’s very hard to get any clear and concise information from them. They just try to wow […]

Westerners as digital nomads :)

The digital nomad lifestyle has been trending for the last few years, and will probably grow further after the pandemic as more people have learned to work remotely. 💻 Many people have created profitable pursuits in this manner, from freelancing to consulting or coaching, or even managing entire startup businesses and leading global teams (kind of like what I do!) On a funny note, it’s interesting to see how people choose their remote locations. For most Westerners, digital nomad-ing almost certainly means moving to Bali or someplace in Thailand where they can get more sun or sit at a beach, […]

Modern day influencers?

Was pondering lately… why are the top influencers of our time mainly athletes and entertainers? The seem to get more than their fair share of attention and social authority. I realize that these things are fun, but are these the right people to dictate our culture and learnings? Are they the right role models for society? And if that’s where the money and fame are, shall we all simply quit what we do and become entertainers instead? Certianly there’s a fortune to be made in celebrity gossip! I wish more people would follow those who are actually building the world […]
